Tottenham's late win over newly-promoted Aston Villa

Tottenham left it late to beat Aston Villa on what was a mixed afternoon for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

John McGinn gave the Midlands outfit an early lead but debutant Tanguy Ndombele scored a stunning equaliser late in the second half.

Harry Kane then did what Harry Kane does best and netted twice in the last few minutes to make the final scoreline look a lot more comfortable than it ultimately was.

Bear with us on this one, but it’s almost – almost – as if leaving out your best player doesn’t make you as good a team.

Mauricio Pochettino is an intelligent coach who clearly has a way with his squad, but why he opted to leave out Christian Erisksen for this one is beyond us.

Spurs look bereft of ideas in the first half, with Erik Lamela – as good as he is – struggling to find the right amount of space to create chances.

And that’s the key – space. Aston Villa offered almost none and that’s exactly the kind of environment that Eriksen thrives in.

Of course, the recent developments over the Dane’s future were the main reason behind his failure to start this match but Pochettino had to be the bigger man in this and realise that his side need Eriksen’s creativity to thrive.

It was no coincidence that they vastly improved when the playmaker came on, and was at the heart of both goals.
