Anthony Martial has played down any potential rivalry with Marcus Rashford for Manchester United’s centre-forward position, but admitted they are running a competition to see who will score the most goals in training.

Many United fans and pundits have reservations about Martial and Rashford playing in the same eleven, considering both players prefer to play through the middle.

But Martial dismissed the idea he and Rashford cannot gel together upfront. ‘At training, we have this competition between us about scoring goals,’ Martial said.

‘We measure who does the best finishing and who scores the most. ‘Who’s winning? Well, that depends… Sometimes it’s him, sometimes it’s me. In games, Marcus likes to play in the middle, like me.

‘I don’t mind dropping off, dropping out, we interchange during games. ‘It doesn’t bother me to let him take the lead occasionally. It helps us to terrorise opposition defences and I hope we can keep it up over the course of the season.’

Martial and Rashford have started both United’s games so far this season, with the attacking pair scoring in the opening day win over Chelsea.

Both forwards are on two goals in two games after Martial scored in the 1-1 draw with Wolves last week.

United take on Crystal Palace this weekend hoping to get back to winning ways and shrug off the penalty controversy of their last game.

Paul Pogba missed from the spot in the draw with Wolves and reports claim Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has now taken the Frenchman off penalty duties.
