Possible Bayern Munich Line-ups this season

Possible Bayern Munich Line-ups this season

There are still so few signings in sight at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern Munich fans are desperate for a new midfielder and an extra forward at the very least but, for now, the squad is looking damn thin.

Unless anything changes, here’s how we think the German champions will line up in 2019/20 …

Plan A

Niko Kovac tried to start with a 4-3-3 last season, only to ditch it for the more stable 4-2-3-1 midway through the campaign.

Pre-season, though, has seen a return to a three-man midfield. With Corentin Tolisso back, Bayern may have to use it to squeeze their strongest players into the team and the extra body should help them create more in possession, something they struggled with last season.

Thiago will be the key and he’s more than up to that challenge. Lucas Hernandez should provide more speed in the backline.

The problem here is the lack of depth on the wings – Alphonso Davies and Thomas Müller would have to play big roles if injury strikes there.

The addition of Benjamin Pavard could also see Kimmich moved into midfield but expect him to continue at right-back.

Plan B

The option that clinched Bayern the league last season is also the safe option and may not be enough this time around.

Still, when the going gets tough, especially in the Champions League, expect Kovac to pair Javi Martinez with Thiago at the base of the midfield.

The defence remains the same, with Jérôme Boateng still unfavoured, and the choice between Müller and Goretzka is the only real call left to make.

And from left-field …

Kovac successfully used a back three at Eintracht Frankfurt but it wasn’t really an option last season.

This time it could be, even though it means shoehorning Serge Gnabry in up front.

The bigger problem, of course, is a lack of cover in defence – as things stand, Jérôme Boateng would be the only senior defender in the squad not selected in this team.
