AC Milan chief Leonardo has warned Gonzalo Higuain to knuckle down amid interest from Chelsea .

Argentine Higuain has struggled to settle at the San Siro following a season-long loan switch from Juventus in the summer.

He failed to find the back of the net for two months before scoring against SPAL prior to the winter break - just his sixth strike in 15 Serie A games this term.

The 31-year-old moved on from Juve after the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo but has not had the desired impact at his new club.

And Leonardo believes he needs to focus on the here and now, not what the future could hold.
“A goal can change things, but if he is to continue here, he needs to take on responsibility,” he said.
“He had a tough moment, he has to put it behind him and get to work.”

Higuain worked under Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri at Napoli and has been linked with joining up with the Italian at Stamford Bridge.

But Leonardo is unconcerned by the rumours.
“There’s no point following rumours and gossip,” he added.

“He is here right now. Seeing as he is here, he needs to get down and actually do something for this team.”

Milan crashed out of the Europa League in the group stage and are just fifth in Serie A.
