Virgil van Dijk joins Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi on the three-man shortlist for the UEFA Player of the Year prize.

The players were selected from an initial choice of ten after scoring the most points in the voting system.

It shows just how good the final candidates performed, when you consider those left out included Eden Hazard and Raheem Sterling.

To decide, a panel of 80 coaches from clubs that competed in the group stages of the Champions League and Europa League, along with 55 journalists chosen by European Sports Media, get to make the call.

In their respective lists, the first choice player is marked down with five points, second place receives three and the final selection gets one.

The award will be presented at the 2019/20 Champions League group stage draw ceremony in Monaco on August 29.

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric was the winner last year after his starring role in helping Croatia reach the World Cup final but doesn’t get a look in this time after a poor 2018/19 campaign.

Van Dijk is favourite for the honour after an outstanding season for both club and country.

The Dutchman was voted PFA Player of the Year and helped Liverpool keep 22 clean sheets in the Premier League, the most in Europe’s six top leagues.

His side were narrowly pipped to the title by Manchester City, but he was instrumental in helping The Reds win a sixth Champions League title, and he finished runner-up to Portugal in the inaugural UEFA Nations League.

On Wednesday, he added the Super Cup to his collection, as Liverpool edged Chelsea 5-4 on penalties.
